Join us for this exclusive listening party with legendary Cuban piano genius Chucho Valdés, in conversation with SFJAZZ Director of Education Rebeca Mauleón. They will play selected pieces from Valdés’ rich musical legacy with Irakere and as a solo artist, and discuss Valdés’ innumerable contributions to jazz as illuminated in their new book Decoding Afro-Cuban Jazz. Written in collaboration between Valdés and Mauleón, Decoding Afro-Cuban Jazz focuses on the inner-workings of Afro-Cuban jazz through the compositions of Valdés and is the first publication of its kind to thoroughly examine the work of a such a legendary figure, providing a gateway to better understanding Afro-Cuban jazz as a whole. In addition, this book opens the door to Valdés’ creative process in bridging the worlds of traditional and contemporary Cuban music with classical and jazz genres, as well as the historical significance of each work, behind-the-scenes stories, and much more.

A book-signing by Maestro Valdés follows the presentation.

Rebeca geeft ons al een stukje inzicht in hoe haar ontmoeting met Chucho en Irakere verliep. Irakere staat inderdaad voor een muzikale revolutie die tot vandaag de dag nog steeds voortduurt....

The memory still jolts her.

It was June 1989 and 27-year-old Rebeca Mauleón arrived early at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, making her way toward the front of the room. It was packed and Mauleón wanted to make sure she had a clear view of the keyboard. She was there to see pianist Chucho Valdés, one of her heroes, and Irakere, the groundbreaking band he had founded 16 years earlier in Havana. A Latin jazz pianist from San Francisco who’d nurtured an obsession with Cuban music ever since her mid-teens, Mauleón knew the band’s recordings inside out. They had a scary level of virtuosity about them – polyrhythmic, turning on a dime – and Mauleón remembers thinking that “they couldn’t possibly pull that off at a live concert, and boy was I pleasantly wrong.
